Autonomous Vehicles: When will Overhype Meet Reality?

There has been much hype in recent years that autonomous vehicles are going to happen in the next year (for three years running). But, the reality seems to indicate that any substantial trials are 2-3 years away and, even then, are likely have drivers in the car for handling unusual situations and increasing safety. There will be some pure plays in very defined routes like taxi and bus fixed routes.
