The Internet of Things represents a vision of a deeply connected world, where sensing, computation, and communication are seamlessly integrated throughout the world around us. The resulting ecosystem of communicating things will be incredibly diverse in its makeup, ranging from vehicles and roadways, to surgical tools and hospital beds, to rivers and plumbing. The collective measurements, calculations, and application possibilities enabled by this new Internet frontier are unprecedented. The Internet of Things is poised to revolutionize products and markets and have a profound impact on society. Achieving the full potential of a deeply connected world requires partnerships that span industry, academia, and government – the same types of partnerships that laid the foundation for the Internet of Things. This talk will survey the past, present, and future of IoT, and the incredible opportunities that are already beginning to unfold.

You Want an IoT Strategy, Now What? A Practical Decision Making Framework for Designing a Flexible Enterprise IoT Deployment
TTR-07
Jeff Newman
VP Corporate Business Development
CalAmp
The transportation and logistics industries have long relied on off-the-shelf fleet management applications to help them achieve greater efficiencies. While these solutions have provided greater insight they’ve failed to leverage a whole wealth of possibilities locked within these dispersed, uncoordinated and inaccessible systems. As new IoT initiatives emerge, so does the need to validate use cases in a timely and cost effective manner while also providing the ability to rapidly scale without having to redesign the system for large deployments. Areas of focus will include real world examples of ways in which platforms can enable central data visualization such as - standardized interfaces for monitoring order-related vehicle and cargo data, customer-specific connection facilities for logistics systems and innovative data integration for truck and trailer telematics, and decision making at the grid-edge . This session will include a discussion on the best practices for evaluating IoT hardware platform capabilities and network connectivity and explore how integrated IoT platforms can enable a full array of services such as – cloud-based security with support, data analytics, real-time notifications, and more. In addition, attendees will learn about the recent trends in IoT that highlight a movement towards a multi-application platform approach that supports process optimization and efficiencies across operations, maintenance, scheduling and purchasing.

We have a deviation in our projections for the number of IoT devices in the tens of billions. How do we account for the different projections for IoT solutions between 20B to 50B IoT devices deployed by 2020? Is this a problem with Hype, or the presumption that starts the count? We ask analyst’s friends to get us to the real numbers, the real successes and the real world.

Keynote Presentation by Ingenu - Five Surprises Awaiting IoT Device Makers
K-03
John Horn
Independent
Technology is supposed to make our lives better. Technology packages up a lot of hard work into an easy to use package. The light bulb took the hard work of traditional oil lamp lighting and put it into a simple bulb/switch combo. Smart phones took the resources of the internet and put them in our pockets. We love to talk about Thomas Edison, Apple, and the other great innovators who put the hard work in to make what was hard, easy. But when it comes to the IoT, we don’t talk about our own innovators, the IoT device makers and what we do to enable them. These device makers do the hard work of combining the connectivity, the sensors, and the hardware into devices that makes our lives easier. Connectivity providers, like Ingenu, have an obligation to provide device makers with IoT connectivity that does the hard work on the wireless side, so they can do the hard work on the hardware side. If connectivity providers neglect their duty to provide true technology, then these innovators are hamstrung in how much simpler they can make our lives because they’ll be busy overcoming the connectivity’s shortcomings. The thing is, not every provider has done the hard work. In this presentation, we highlight some of these surprises and show that real technology brings true simplicity.

As we look at the industry we see a lot of dynamics in play. The first is that we have lots of start-ups who are going through their early rounds of funding and often are the darlings of the press. Then we have the companies that are already successes that are looking to find growth in acquisition. IoT is full of opportunities, we have asked panel to help show us where IoT money matters.

The IoT is making great strides toward adoption in the industrial workplace, but what about the office? Today's business environment is marked by an ongoing evolution of the concept of a "workplace." Businesses small and large are moving away from traditional, structured office space at dedicated locations, toward shared space, flexible layout, open seating locations, and remote work. Yet, for the most part, the workplace has little interaction with its people and physical assets. How does that change, and what are the opportunities, as the IoT ecosystem and its technologies continue to advance? Is the workplace a fertile market for IoT and, if so, what are the catalysts? What are the challenges facing managers, innovators, and vendors who want to incorporate more IoT into the workplace? And, at the end of the day, what does IoT offer to various stakeholders? This talk will attempt to map out the current state of IoT in the workplace, and project some trends that may influence future adoption.
